LOOK AT IT. I needs it. I can’t afford it, we’ll MAYBE I could make the payments work, but I, sure as hell, can’t afford to maintain it. But my god. I need it.
Very detailed CL ad.

For the same reason you posted this here, for us to just torture you more. Because you enjoy it. You love to suffer. You’ll say you want help avoiding the inevitable purchase...but no. That’s not what you want at all.
BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT

I wish I were shopping for cars again. Much for fun than house-hunting.

We gave up on house hunting and bought the place we were renting

He’s the second owner in 8 years not all that surprising that he’s still making payments

No-one needs a BMW. You just want one. If I wanted one then this one would not satisfy that want. BMW’s are supposed to be aspirational but the 1 series only aspires to be a Corolla that’s made in Germany. Back in the 90s, the 3 series had the same problem.

I’m not a fan of the 1 Series, colleague had a 135 as a courtesy car while her M3 was in the shop for a couple of days, it’s not much smaller than a 3 Series and I don’t like the looks. Interior was a little claustrophobic for me, too hard and crampt.

Save yourself some misery and get a 128i. Sits a little higher, less maintenance cause no turbos, same stubby proportions and $5000 give or take cheaper(put it towards maintenance!).
I really wanted a 128i before I settled on the beetle but couldn’t find one in manual nearby.

If it’s a Corolla than it’s a twin turbo, in-line 6, RWD, and that sounds great. BMWs aren’t supposed to be aspirational, they are supposed to be fun, and comfortable. Only in the last few years has their image changed to making big luxury cars and nice crossovers.

Actually, I aspired to the bosses new 7 series saloon car back in 1990...
As for the 1 series...not so much. Certainly if I’d have to get finance to obtain a 7 year old version of one.

But a house is a place to store cars.

Well yeah, but the 7 and then 3 are entirely different creatures. And the 1 just took the 3s old place of being the little fun one.

Sounds like a lot lke my situation. I’ll have To get down to Minneapolis before I buy anything. Maybe a manual 128i will turn up by then. Also the dealer I’m going to test drive the Beetle at might be willing to go find me something like that, as he specializes in German cars. However, I just found this and, for me it makes a lot more sense. An dback in 2010 it was my dream car. My “I’m going to buy that when I graduate college and get a great job!” Car. https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/dak/ctd/d/2013-hyundai-genesis-coupe/6445048674.html

2-series are better in every way, except for current purchase prices.

Yeah that’s this car is about 3 grand above my comfort zone. I’m shooting for 8-12 grand. I would for sure consider a 128i if I found a manual

Jeez I had no idea 135’s were going for $15k still!! Seems a bit steep for what it is to me.

Perhaps, but it’s programmable to be more to one’s liking.

True.
Fun story.
Back in 1993 I bought a Diahatsu Charade four door hatchback, brand new. Basic little econobox that was far more fun to drive (especially on dirt) than it deserved to be (many were being turned into rally cars at the time). 4 cylinder, manual, seated five at a pinch. Not much in the way of features : air con, radio cassette...and that’s about it. I think it was 14 grand.
A mate (at much the same time) bought himself a brand new entry level model 3 Series sedan - 4 cylinder, four doors, manual, cloth seats. He’d always wanted a new BMW. We sat in his car once and compared features. The only thing his car had that mine didn’t was power windows and a BMW badge. And it was more than twice the price...but it wasn’t twice as good. It certainly didn’t do Sydney traffic twice as good. But of course that didn’t matter because it was a BMW...
Fun is what you make of it in the end!!!
